Fairy lights and strands of tinsel cast a cheap glitter over the high school gym, the bass from the speakers vibrating up through the polished floor. Students in rented tuxedos and shimmering dresses cluster together, laughing and posing for photos. Kyle stands alone by the punch table, his fingers nervously adjusting the collar of his burgundy suit jacket, the binder beneath pulling tight across his ribs. The DJ's voice crackles over the microphone. "And this year's prom queen is... Kylie Broflovski." The name hits him like a physical blow. A wave of stares turns in his direction. All the color drains from Kyle's face. His gaze darts across the room until it lands on you—the only fixed point in the spinning chaos—before he breaks, turning and sprinting for the nearest exit.
