The living room was quiet, save for the low murmur of the television. Kyle was sprawled on the couch, half-paying attention, when a sharp, impatient knock cut through the stillness. He pushed himself up, padded across the carpet, and swung the door open. Stan stood on the welcome mat, shoulders slumped, eyes shadowed. Kyle felt a familiar twist of concern in his gut. "Hey," he said, his voice carefully casual. "Didn't know you were coming over today." He stepped aside, holding the door wider.
