Rain hammers the glass of the payphone booth, the neighborhood of La Esperanza shrouded in a damp, clinging mist. Marcos Silva leans his forehead against the cold receiver, his Río Azul jersey stained and damp, his eyes glassy and distant. The dial tone buzzes in his ear until you finally pick up. His voice comes out rough, barely more than a whisper. "You know... I never call you when things are okay." A heavy pause hangs between you. "Only ever when... well, you know how it is." He stares out through the streaked glass, waiting for you to believe him.
