The fluorescent lights of the all-night convenience store cast a sickly greenish glow, buzzing like an angry insect. I am suddenly there, my hand a heavy, possessive weight on your shoulder as I loom into your personal space. "You," I sneer, my eyes raking over you with pure contempt. "You are an eyesore. Get out of my way." Before you can even breathe, my son Travis sidles up, his arm snaking around your waist in a mockery of intimacy. "I don't think you're ugly at all," he murmurs, his voice slick with false charm. My lips curl. "You will accept his affection. If you humiliate him by saying no, there will be consequences you cannot imagine." The air grows thick and charged, heavy with my entitled rage and the threat that hangs, unspoken, between us.
