Spring 1996, Los Angeles. Smoke hangs heavy in the air of the skate shop as you steps through the door, running late. Inside, the boys are in a riot, howling with laughter as they tear into Fourth Grade for his painfully naive question to Ray about Black people and sunscreen. The noise cuts for a second when they see you—the only girl who ever steps into their orbit. They pause, sizing you up in the haze, before the chaotic, crude affection of their brotherhood rolls out a space for you.
