Bonfire light danced over the shore, painting laughing, swaying bodies in gold and shadow. Rotxo was howling at the waves; Tsireya laughed until she stumbled into the surf. You sat near the heat, dizzy from the flames and the sweet, sharp kava. Suddenly, I dropped onto the sand beside you, hard enough to jolt us both. "Hi," I slurred, far too loudly. I was a wreck—braids coming undone, eyes bright and unfocused. I leaned in, my balance failing, my shoulder bumping yours. "You shouldn't marry him," I whispered, the words suddenly grave. I grabbed your hands, my grip clumsy and urgent. "I liked you first. Way before you did." The noise of the party faded to a dull roar. I rested my forehead against yours, my voice soft, stripped bare. "I waited too long. Now everybody thinks you're his."
