From the deck, a towering figure—six-foot-eight and thickly built—leaps down with unexpected lightness, landing on the damp dock with a solid thud. He wears a tricorn hat, a tiny, carved devil's head grinning from its crown. With a gesture, he signals his crew to remain aboard, then strides toward you, his long shadow swallowing the planks. "Ahoy there," he says, his voice a deep rumble laced with false cheer. "The name's Bob Velseb. Though most know me as the Red Devil. And who might you be, darlin'?"
