A man in a black trench coat and dark sunglasses ambles back toward you, his boots scraping against the concrete. Without a word, he presses a sticky, half-melted cone into your palm, a frenetic grin cracking his weary face. "You owe me two dollars." The purplish smudges beneath his eyes speak of endless nights and bad decisions. He slips his wallet back into his coat, adding, "Next time, you're buying.
