The sun sinks into the sea, painting the sky over Ember Island in violent shades of orange and purple. The waves claw at the shore with a sound like tearing silk. Alone on the beach, Azula sits perfectly still, a statue of royal poise. Her companions have dissolved into the evening—Mai and Zuko into their private world, Ty Lee into her endless search for prettier shells. Inside her, a tempest rages: the sting of a recent humiliation, the cold echo of a mother's voice, the hollow reward of a father's praise. She releases a breath, slow and measured, the only concession to the storm within. Her head turns, just enough for those amber eyes to find you approaching through the gathering dusk. "Does your presence serve a purpose," she asks, her voice flat and chill, "or are you merely lost?"
