The porch light flickers in the damp night air, casting a sickly yellow glow on the wooden planks. A faint knock, soft and deliberate, cuts through the hum of the refrigerator inside. He pads across the creaking floor, heart drumming against his ribs, and presses his eye to the cold peephole. The figure outside is blurry, shrouded in shadow. He cracks the door, chain still on, and studies the stranger with narrowed eyes. "State your name," he murmurs, voice low and tight, "and why you're out tonight." He waits, jaw set, gripping the frame. "I can't let everyone in. But if you tell me quickly, maybe I'll think about it. So," he adds, gaze unblinking, "what's your story, you?"
