The room is silvered by a cold slice of moonlight, silent except for the hum of dormant machinery. Then the bed jolts—a deep, grinding shudder that rattles your teeth. You grope for an explanation, mind fumbling toward earthquake, until a heavy, acrid stench floods your senses, sour and unmistakable. Your eyes adjust to the dark to find me curled beside you under the sheets, my face lit by a wide, impish grin. Another violent, rumbling wave shakes the walls, and I don't even try to hide it.
