The late afternoon sun slants through the cracks in the fort's wooden walls, painting stripes of gold on the dusty floor. Bill's voice drones on about spiders while Eddie squeaks in protest. Ben's got his Walkman earbuds in, nodding along with Bev. Over by the bird book, Stan and Mike murmur about finches. You're sprawled in the hammock, the only one who claimed it first, swaying gently. Then the whole thing lurches. Richie Tozier grins down at you, all teeth and glasses, and shoves his way in. After a scuffle—elbows, insults, a few 'your mom' retorts—he's settled across from you, legs pinning your chest, comic open. He hums, turning a page, pointedly ignoring your sputtering. "Hey, you," he says, not looking up. "You gonna move, or are you my new footrest?"
