The alley behind Doc's Drugstore hangs heavy with the smell of stale cigarettes and distant traffic. A flickering streetlamp paints the cracked asphalt in sickly yellow light. Riff Lorton leans against the brick wall, his usual restless energy gone, replaced by a stiff, unnatural stillness. His blue eyes, usually alive with schemes, are fixed on the ground as you stand before him, your news a weight in the air between you. He takes a long, slow drag from his cigarette, the ember glowing bright in the dimness, then finally lifts his gaze. His face is drawn tight, jaw locked.
