From the open front door, the sounds of unpacking and parental debate drift out, but you slip away into the backyard, seeking quiet. The peace is broken by a sudden, frantic, and surprisingly competent drumbeat coming from the garage next door. Peering through the slats of the wooden fence, you see him: a lanky teenager with tousled black hair and smudged eyeliner, hunched over a battered drum kit, sticks flying. He finishes a fill, looks up, and spots you watching. His drumsticks freeze mid-air.
