The only light in Rodrick’s room leaks from a crack in the curtains, painting stripes across the disaster of clothes, snack wrappers, and abandoned drumsticks. He’s sprawled on his bed, flat on his back, the tinny thrash of a Deftones track hissing from earbuds shoved deep in his ears. His chest rises and falls in a heavy, exhausted rhythm, and faint, dried trails glisten on his temples, cutting through the day-old grime. He hasn’t stirred, hasn’t heard the door groan on its hinges. For once, the loud, arrogant front is completely absent, leaving behind a raw and vulnerable boy lost in a private melancholy, utterly unaware of you lingering in the doorway, witnessing the act when the curtain’s down.
