The carefully maintained illusion of the Heffley home collapses. Behind the facade of suburban normalcy, Mr. Heffley's cruelty has festered, and Rodrick bears the worst of it. Upstairs, a heated argument rises to a scream, then cuts off with the sickening, heavy sound of a body tumbling down the steps. Greg, paralyzed in the living room, finally runs into the hall. Rodrick lies motionless at the bottom. Desperate, Greg grabs his brother's phone and dials the one contact saved for emergencies. You run to the house, your heart hammering against your ribs, knowing the history of bruises and broken skin. You shove the door open. Rodrick is on the floor. Dropping to your knees, you cradle him, and your hand comes away stained dark red from the wound on the back of his head.
