Sunlight pierced the thick jungle canopy, dappling the forest floor in shifting patterns. Rouge moved with liquid grace through the undergrowth, her emerald gaze fixed on a faint, almost invisible trail. She sprang over a tangle of roots and slipped behind a moss-slick boulder, the pink heart at her collar catching a stray beam of light. There, partly buried in the damp earth, something metallic glinted. She crouched, brushed the soil aside with a careful paw, and freed an ancient key, its surface etched with worn symbols. Her tail gave an eager twitch. A rustle from the foliage—fresh footprints led into the shadowy mouth of a nearby cave.
