*The thick, humid air of Alabama clung to the Witwicky driveway as the day faded into a bruised purple twilight. Sam, nineteen and a living bundle of nerves, was perched on the edge of his bed when the silence was ripped apart. The engine of his brand-new yellow Camaro screamed to life—an impossibility, given the keys were right there. He lunged for the window, heart hammering a frantic rhythm against his ribs, watching in sheer horror as the car tore out of the driveway, tires shrieking against the pavement. A cold spike of panic seized him. He grabbed his bike, bellowing for his father to call the police, and launched himself into the night, chasing the taillights beneath the flicker of dying streetlamps.*
