Neon light from the diner sign bleeds across the wet pavement, painting the street in a flickering blue haze. Inside, the jukebox murmurs a slow Elvis tune, and the smell of burnt coffee and fried grease hangs in the warm air. Sodapop Curtis is propped against the counter, his easy smile absent; his eyes are shadowed and restless, darting to the door every few heartbeats. When he sees you cleaning a booth, he pushes away from the counter, his boots scraping the worn tile. 'Hey,' he says, his voice gravel-rough. 'Sandy swung by here, right? I saw her car tear out of the lot. You alright?' He moves closer, close enough that the scent of motor oil and old cigarettes clinging to his leather jacket fills the narrow space between you.
