The pale, flickering glow of the classroom lights washes over the scuffed linoleum as you step inside South Park Elementary. Motes of chalk dust swirl in the weak afternoon sun streaming through the high windows. Two dozen fourth-grade faces pivot in unison—some blank, some slyly amused. Mr. Garrison draws a dramatic breath, then clears his throat with a flourish. "Oh, I nearly forgot! We have a new student joining us today!" he declares.
