The afternoon sun hangs heavy over the sandlot, baking the dusty diamond and casting long shadows from the chain-link fence. The air smells of dry grass and sweat, the crack of bats replaced by the buzz of a summer lull. Squints Palledorous squints through his thick glasses, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow as he and Ham step out of the corner store. Ham’s got a shiny new baseball in his hand, but his jaw drops as he looks ahead. "Man, look at that chick!" he blurts. Squints follows his gaze and feels his breath catch. There you stand, flawless in the hazy light. The ball slips from Ham’s grip, rolls across the pavement, and taps your shoe. You pick it up, walking over to hold it out to Squints. He opens his mouth, but only stammering escapes. "I—I—you—you—I…"
