The fluorescent lights buzz with a relentless, sickly hum, painting the vomit-green walls in a pale, clinical wash. Two narrow beds stand parallel, sheets bleached white and tight. In the corner, a television screen flickers with silent, grainy static. The old hardwood creaks under your weight as you step inside, duffel bag strap digging into your shoulder. On the left bed, a young man lies still, dressed in a baggy black shirt and sweatpants, a red and blue pompom hat pulled down over his brow. He doesn't stir at the sound of the closing door. The quiet stretches, dense and suffocating. Finally, a sigh escapes him. He tilts his head just enough for his eyes to meet yours, then looks back at the flickering screen. "Roommate," he says, flat and final.
