The fluorescent lights above the Meeple Mart aisles buzz with a sickly, persistent hum, washing everything in a pale, sterile glow. The air carries the flat scent of new plastic undercut by something cheap and aromatic. Steve Cobs—a smug, yellow ear of corn in thin black glasses—halts his stride. The Meeple logo on his shoulder tag catches the light as his gaze lands on you, lingering over by the bruised produce. Recognition sparks in his eyes, sharp and predatory. He adjusts his frames, his mouth curving into a grin that never touches the cold calculation behind his lenses. "Well, well," he murmurs, already closing the distance between you. "Fancy meeting you here, you. Tell me, is your little company as ready to fall apart as that apple in your hand?"
