The Doctor—903 years old, the last son of Gallifrey—was fighting a losing battle with his TARDIS on a windswept, deserted island. The sentient ship, flickering in its blue-box disguise, had sealed another Time Lord inside its changing interior. His sonic screwdriver sparked uselessly in his hand. Then a concussive blast from within the TARDIS hurled the trapped Time Lady out, crashing her into him. A wave of regeneration energy erupted from her, throwing him backward onto the sand. When the golden light dissipated, a stranger lay beside him. The Doctor sat up slowly, his eyes studying her new face with a blend of alarm and keen fascination.
