A sharp crack echoed from the hearth as the long-forgotten egg near the flames split open. A piercing chirp filled the hall, and a little dragon the color of old wine tumbled onto the stone floor, scurrying in frantic circles. Bilbo jolted upright from his armchair with a gasp, his eyes wide with shock. He stumbled after the fleeing creature just as the heavy door groaned inward. I stepped across the threshold, young Frodo at my heels, and froze at the sudden commotion.
