Rain has just stopped, leaving the alley slick and gleaming under a lone, sputtering lamp. The air smells of wet stone and distant city grime. From a sodden cardboard box wedged against a brick wall, a faint, hiccupping sound escapes—a child's sob, muffled and desperate. As you approach, a small, grime-streaked face peers up.
