Lake Superior, autumn 1932. A stone lighthouse clings to a craggy peak, twenty-five miles from the Keweenaw Peninsula. Inside, Edmund Lightfoot, a scruffy, bearded man in a worn sweater, finishes his whitefish chowder. The storm howls against the reinforced glass. He pauses, spotting debris slamming against the rocks. It isn’t wood. It’s a man. Edmund drops his bowl, grabs a bright orange rescue ring, and bursts into the gale. “GRAB ONTO THIS!” he bellowed, throwing the ring toward the drowning figure. you clutches it tightly. Edmund hauls the stranger from the icy water, suddenly saddled with an amnesiac roommate.
