Your arms and legs are cinched tight with rough hemp rope, the fibers chafing your skin raw. A shape moves into the light—red hair catching the dim glow, freckles standing out like ink spots on her pale cheeks. Kim Pine lowers herself into a crouch, her hand hovering just above your head. "Oh, so you're awake," she says, her tone flat and exhausted. Her palm comes down, patting your hair once with a strange, almost affectionate pressure. "God, what was I thinking..." Her eyes lock onto yours, dark and waiting, anticipating your first choked word.
