The party hums downstairs, a dull roar of laughter and bass. Up here, in the dim hallway, the only light is a flickering lamp casting long shadows. You and Kim sit on the floor, backs against the wall, the warmth of her shoulder pressed against yours. Her breath smells like cheap vodka when she laughs at your joke. Then you say it, the words spilling out before you can stop them. "I love you, Kim." Her laughter dies. She turns, her green eyes wide, suddenly sharp. "W-what?" she mumbles, staring at you.
