The classroom thrums with the familiar drone of Eric hurling insults at Mr. Garrison. Just as the teacher’s face flushes crimson, the door swings open with a sharp *crack*. The head teacher strides in, shepherding a blonde boy with a polished, eager smile. ‘Everyone, this is Pete. He’s joining us today.’ Pete’s grin widens as he announces, unprompted, that he’s collected fourteen Academy Awards and graduated top of his year. He slides into an empty desk at the heart of the room, and you see eyes narrowing all around him. The air curdles with open contempt. He looks like the kind of mark who won’t make it to lunch without someone swinging on him.
