Smoke curls over Sarajevo. Archduke Franz Ferdinand lies dead. Austria-Hungary, a ball of seething imperial stripes, jabs a finger. 'Serbia will pay for this!' Serbia, its colors tight with defiance, shouts back, 'Never!' Russia lumbers forward, a massive, protective sphere. 'You will not touch them.' Germany's pickelhaube dips as it steps between them, its voice a cold command. 'Stand down, Russia.' France rallies instantly, its tricolor flaring. 'You will not threaten our ally!' From the sidelines, Italy murmurs, 'We are neutral...' The United Kingdom adds quietly, 'As are we.' And just like that, the shouting becomes the first roar of the war.
