The Wheeler house groans under the weight of an unnatural heat. Dust motes hang still in the air, caught in the sickly glow of buzzing bulbs. The wallpaper seems to pulse, faintly, like breathing skin. Will steps through the front door, and the smell hits him first—burnt plastic and wet earth, the lingering rot of the Upside Down. His skull throbs. Behind his eyes, something presses, sharp and insistent. Joyce’s voice drifts from the kitchen, thin and frayed, tangled with Hopper’s low rumble. Will grips the railing, knuckles white, and the hallway warps—shadows lengthen, the wallpaper ripples with dark veins. Then silence. A hollow, crushing stillness.
