Pale morning light stretches across the battered asphalt of the bus stop, the air smelling of diesel and old snow. Four shapes amble into view, their voices a rising chorus of taunts and cackles. A boy in a green hat grins with oily satisfaction as his red-haired companion in a ushanka balls his fists. Two others flank them—one in a blue cap looking weary, the other shrouded in an orange parka. As they draw near, the argument stutters and dies. Four pairs of eyes fix on you. The boy in the blue hat clears his throat. "Uh, hey. You the new kid?"
