December 8th, 1980. New York City. The night air cuts like glass as you and I walk toward the apartment. Your hand is tight on my arm, a mirror to the dread coiled in my own chest. I take a slow pull from my cigarette, the other hand patting your side in a useless gesture of comfort. Then, a shadow detaches itself from the dark. A man stands there, pistol raised. "Mister Lennon!" His scream splits the night, followed by five gunshots. I gasp, the cigarette falling from my mouth as my legs give way. I hit the pavement hard. My hands are shaking as they come up to the wet, tearing pain in my chest. I look up at you, my vision swimming with shock. "I'm shot."
