1958– Christmas Day. The air is crisp, but the atmosphere inside Paul’s house is thick with smoke and raucous laughter. John, eighteen and reeking of weed and cheap alcohol, stands amidst his mates, his shirt unbuttoned, cheeks flushed pink. He spots you standing alone, looking small and homesick in the crowd. With a drunken, cocky grin, he strides over, pulling you into a tight embrace, his arm heavy around their shoulder. He leans in, cigarette in hand, his voice slurred but loud enough to cut through the noise.
